News March 20th 2017

Hiya all

I was honoured and delighted to be invited onto Tom Robinson’s BBC Radio 6Music programme broadcast on Saturday March 18th. The show forms a preview to the station’s forthcoming Festival in Glasgow which will take place this coming weekend 24th-26th. We talked about my personal encounters with music from, and in, Glasgow. Having been born, and brought up, in East Fife I’m clearly not a Glaswegian but I’ve lived there often, I live there now and I’ve had a lot to do with the city over the years. I prepared an illustrated narrative for the conversation which strolls across the decades from Robert Wilson and Lonnie Donegan in the 1950s to Emma Pollock and Roddy Hart in the 21st century.

I’m pleased to say it’s been attracting favourable comment on social media, including from the USA. Matt Arnett, Ginger Krawiec and Jack Regan, pals from Atlanta Georgia, are 6Music fans and posted about their enjoyment of the show.

It’ll be available on iPlayer until 16th April. That date is, coincidently, what would have been Gerry Rafferty’s 70th birthday. He, of course, makes an appearance in the piece. Here’s the link:-

Following my Old Fruitmarket, Celtic Connections concert in February, the initial batch of dates for the 70/50 in 2017 shows took place over the first two weeks of this month. Thanks to all who came to see, and hear, me.

I got a bit of a head cold at the end of the first week, just before the London show. It did affect the voice but it made life interesting, figuring how to navigate it. It was a bit nasal but, with an amendment or two here’n’there, all seemed OK. Lisbee Stainton joined me in London for ‘Gently does it’ in the first half and ‘Oh me oh my’ in the second.

I hope to see you at one or other of the next batch of dates.
